Although we have been fans for while we have been particularly enjoying the music of rationality champion Mr Tim Minchin recently. Thought it would be nice to compile my favourite 5 songs so I can hopefully get more people to pay attention to what Tim has done. I’m sure you’ve already heard of him but for those unfamiliar I will copy and paste Wikipedia for you.

Timothy David “Tim” Minchin is an Australian – British comedian, actor, and musician.
Tim Minchin is best known for his musical comedy, which has featured in six CDs, three DVDs and a number of live comedy shows which he has performed internationally. He has also appeared on television in Australia, Britain and the United States. After growing up in Perth, Western Australia, he attended the University of Western Australia and WAAPA before moving to Melbourne in 2002. His breakout show, “Dark Side”, launched him into the public eye, achieving critical success at the 2005 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Minchin is an excellent musician, comedian and song writer and if you are genuinely unfamiliar with his work I hope you enjoy this post. We recently watched his Tim Minchin & the Hertiage Orchestra DVD and I enjoyed every minute of it, very sad we missed out on the tour. I personally find all the songs below funny but some have been slightly removed from context, please note if you’ve not really seen much Tim Minchin before and think any of this seems puerile you’re largely missing the point.

His comedy is very clever and I do him no favours by separating some of these out of routine I’m sure, but take my advice, he’s a pretty smart guy. I am also 100% behind him when it comes to the views I have seen him express in both his stage performances and TV/radio interviews regarding religion, spirituality and science, and the very fact he is openly a part of/involved with the British Humanist Association means he earns my respect regardless of how talented he is with music and comedy.

Anyway, on with the list and special thanks to Tim for actually giving me permission to use one of his songs on here which isn’t already bouncing around the net/on YouTube. Also i’m gonna throw a NSFW warning on this because of language, if you’ve got headphones you’ll be fine.

5. Five Poofs and 2 Pianos

This is one of Tim’s less “direct” songs but for some reason I just really like it. Back in the days when Jonathan Ross was on BBC I watched almost every week (mainly because I liked knowing massive comics geek like Wossy was running a prime time BBC show) but I have to admit to being a bit of a fan of his camp house band, 4 Poofs and a Piano. When Minchin came onto the show and sang this I didn’t really know him but have to say was instantly won over. It’s catchy, funny and manages to not feel offensive at all even though it using some language [generally stupid] people would associate with homophobia. This song still makes me smile now and while many of Tims songs are about more controversial subjects this one manages to be funny and kind of sweet at the same time.

Favourite part of the song has to be the ending, love the rhyming and love the look on Jamie Cullens face in the green room, also gotta love anything that slags off Jan Mior and the Daily Mail.

4. Song for Phil Daust

Each time I hear this song I just sit through it smiling. As always with Tims work the music seems to perfectly not go with the lyrics and I love that juxtaposition, it makes the whole thing ten times funnier. Some people will, i’m sure agree, that I can take to criticism quite badly sometimes too and one of the reasons I love this song is that I think it perfectly captures that feeling when you know you’re the one kinda in the wrong but you just can’t let the personal side of the criticism go. I’m not famous enough for anyone to have written a real column about me but if I were and someone had a go at my work I’ve no doubt I would feel exactly like this.

Favourite bit of the song has to be “I hope something you love catches on fire” it’s not as harsh as some of the other comments but its so deliciously full of malice.

3. Not Perfect

This isn’t really a funny song but it’s just so beautiful I couldn’t miss it off the list. It’s one of my favourite songs full stop, partially because I think we all need to be reminded every now and again about the fact that things don’t need to be perfect to be enjoyable and partially because the music and lyrics are just so simple and pretty. I have started thinking about this song whenever I get especially down and listening to it really cheers me up and surely that’s one of the most important points of music and comedy.

My favourite bit has to be when he’s singing about his mind towards the end, lots of nice imagery and a bit of comedy too.

2. The Good Book

OK So I’m breaking out the religious satire now, it’s almost a speciality of Tim’s and he is one of the best at it out there. I’m staunchly atheist so I find this video both funny and accurate, the lyrics towards the end discussing people making modern day decisions based on evidence in the Bible is spot on. It’s one the things that annoys me most about forcefully religious people, stopping the rest of the species progress because of their beliefs. I don’t want to go into a rant as part of this post so I hope you thought the song was funny, itf nothing else it’s really, really catchy.

Favourite bit has to be the Bible “book reviews”, they really make me laugh.

1. Thank You God

Thank You God is my favourite of Tim’s Song to date, it’s another religious themed one from a later tour. A response to a comment by a fan who presented Tim with the “proof” of a miracle after his church congregation “prayed” his mums eye better. Its bitingly sarcastic, extremely clever, occasionally shocking and as catchy as Tims other songs. I really like the main argument pushed over in this and how Tim doesn’t hold anything back at all. Some people would criticise it for the fairly harsh language but I think it’s used to genuine effect. I currently struggle to get through a day without listening to it and I can’t give Tim enough credit for putting something this good out there.

Favourite bit has to be the “Fuck me Sam, what are odds” line. Again there is some awesome lyrical/musical juxtaposition stuff going on and it makes me laugh every time I hear it.

That’s it, there is loads more on YouTube if you want more, Tims official YouTube channel is here. Honorable mention goes to the beat poem Storm, it wasn’t song-y enough to make my list but its funny as hell and, in my opinion, very right. Other honorable mentions go to the very funny Pope Song and the very clever 3 Minute Song.

Hope you’ve enjoyed all the songs on here, thanks to Tim for being so bloody good at his trade and for letting me embed the MP3. Go and buy his DVDs, he does lots of funny talking between the songs and frankly he deserves our money.

Here we have Mr Samuel L. Jackson reading a bedtime story written by Adam Mansbach but it’s slightly less traditional.

My hope is that this is followed up with the sequel “I can;t concentrate on my shopping, please shut that fucking kid up”. Maybe not.

Wikipedia claims this has been optioned for a movie as well. I hope Terry Gilliam directs.

One thing I love about the gaming industry is that it seems to have an almost infinite amount of space to take this piss out of itself. Gamers are happy to laugh at each other, dress up as characters and mess around or generally have fun singing and playing air guitar with our mates. Unless of course you are a “serious” gamer or a “fanboy” in which case you’re still really funny because we’re [real gamers] laughing at you.

Anyway one of my Twitter Fellows, good web chap called Rhys Wynne, put me onto a little gem of a “professional” gaming reviewer who goes by the handle of Yahtzee and writes in a column he calls Zero Punctuation.

Now it has to be said in advanced this is probably best enjoyed on headphones if near anyone who is a wimp (or at work) but if you enjoy the Penny Arcade trashing gamers humour I promise you will enjoy these. Basically Zero Punctuation reviews (well at least talks about) game release that are accompanied by simple, but almost infinitely funny little 2D cartoons. His over the top critical style is awesome and reminds of that old Kingdom Hearts vs Resident Evil 4 youtube vid that did the rounds a while ago.

The reviews are generally funny because they are (at least partially) grounded in truth and Yahtzee’s blend of pop culture references, fast talking dialogue and British style complaining humour (think of a cross between Douglas Adams, Frankie Boyle and an issue of GamesMaster) really strikes a chord with me.

In my opinion it’s all made twice as funny because of English humour references (pick up on football results readings, UK postcodes and more) and the fact he now lives in Austgrailia and therefore has to play watered down versions of a lot of the games or wait ages for PAL conversions.

Generally reviews are around 5 minutes long (which is perfect we all hate over blown bullshit reviews) and if you’re really picky about language or spoilers then maybe don’t go watching them all. I have literally yet to find one of them not funny and I have pretty much caught up with them all. My hat off to this guy and I will paying close attention to him in the future.

I feel gutted that I have not come across this before so sorry if we look a little behind the times on this one. A few picks of my favourites below;

A little while back, we posted the “Shawshank Redemption in a Minute” rap. This afternoon I stumbled across a similar kind of thing but about Terminator 2.

This is perhaps a bit long at 9 minutes, but it’s very funny and some of the rhymes are excellent, never more so than when they’re teaming the rap with bits of dialogue from the film. It’s very cleverly done and manages to name drop Christian Bale at the end. Worth watching for the rap-dialogue rhymes alone. And it’s all done in an English accent :D

If you already like kittens you’ll definitely like this if not, well, it’s still going to be pretty cute for you! Best video in ages simply because of the cute factor.

We’re all fans of Russell Howard in GFUK and I thought it was about time to give his new show, Russell Howard’s Good News, a mention.

It was the third show this week and I think it really hit its stride this week. The featured video clips were brilliantly funny – guy kicking a football into a police van is so much funnier than it sounds – and there was a bit of audience interaction too. The “mystery guest” feature was dropped for this week and I felt the show was better for it.

I like the way the news is split up into categories in order to be properly nitpicked and picking up on some of the smaller stories of the week works well too (an example being Arnold Schwarzenegger’s rather interesting letter).

If you like Mock The Week you’ll probably like this too.

Amazingly intelligent and funny comedian Ben Miller, most famous at the moment for his sketch show Armstrong and Miller and for playing braces toting paper pusher with a hear Lester in ITV’s Primeval series spoke out twice this week regarding the current level of censorship in comedy and general reaction and offence.

Comedy means a hell of a lot to me, and the rest of Guardian Force too and having someone as genuinely clever as Miller speak my views out there really means a lot and more than anything I hope this wakes a few people up.

Take a quick watch of Miller’s brief, but very well put together, talk on censorship in comedy,

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/the_daily_politics/8329463.stm

Sorry I can’t embed this one :(

Not only is Miller’s rant funny as hell but it cuts amazing well to the point. I am not going to go off into my own rant as tempting as that might be, Stephen Fry taught me that it’s a mark of bad journalism and to be honest Miller has already perfectly summed up my feelings.

The perception of offensiveness is getting out of hand and pretty soon we wont even be able to enjoy good comedy at all. He speaks a little more in this panel interview although its disappointingly short.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/the_daily_politics/8330089.stm

One thing Miller does not directly mention which needs putting out there is this, stop getting offended because the fucking paper told you too. It’s just plain sad.

Formulate your own opinion and for fucks sake understand that what you find offensive many people find fun, but most important of all get over yourselves.

Unfortunately I am more than aware that most people reading this are already sensible enough not to need that advice, catch 22 and all that eh? A huge thanks to Ben Miller for doing this, he is putting himself in the firing line for the morons and it’s a brave thing to do.

Hope you enjoyed the videos let us know what you think with the comments!
