MMO Updates

Well E3 has been and gone and things have changed on the Guardian force MMO front.

We’ve got news on several new MMO’s as well as one being released recently. Lets take a look at the important information.

APB

First up is the new world we are playing in, APB: All Points Bulliten.

APB is being (fairly accurately) described as a kind of Grand theft Auto MMO, it’s Enforcers vs. Criminals in a sprawling city full of potential victims and everyone’s packing heat and jacking cars.  It’s a great game and the multi player experience is worth a lot and it has quite a good pay structure where you can either pay per hour or purchase unlimited monthly time. Arkham Horror Review

A few weeks ago I decided we need something a little new in the GFUK circle so I went out and purchased the highly recommended Fantasty Flight board game of “Arkham Horror”

I am a massive HP Lovecraft fan so the though of a multilayer co-operative board game sounded really appealing. It doesn’t come cheap (around £40-50) for the starter however it’s got a lot of pieces and it’s very high quality build.

How Does Arkham Horror Work?

Essentially Arkham Horror is a scaled down version of a tabletop roleplay game, there are preset characters and equipment, events, monsters and locations all represented either on the board or by tokens, you make skill checks with D6 and different effects come out of passing or failing them.

When the game starts an “Ancient One” is selected, these monsters are typical Lovecraftien gods or Great Old Ones such as Cuthhullu and Azathoth. Each Ancient One has different on going effects, monster modifiers and combat powers so the Ancient One chosen at the start can massively change how the game plays out offering large variety.

Each Ancient One has a Doom track which fill up as the game goes on, if it fills up the monster awakens and you have to face it in (a usually very difficult) combat session so your usually aiming to win the game before this happens. Winning the game is done by closing and/or sealing gates to other dimensions which open each turn, essentially it’s a race to shut the gates as they’re opening. (more…)

Little Big Planet 2

10 May

I loved the first Little Big Planet game- loads of fun and something a bit different. Now the trailer for the second game has been released and it looks like they’ve upped their game…

I can’t wait to play this! It also sounds like it comes complete with an irritatingly catchy sound track again just to ensure that you’ll be humming the music for days after you’ve played.

What we Were Missing: Zero Punctuation

One thing I love about the gaming industry is that it seems to have an almost infinite amount of space to take this piss out of itself. Gamers are happy to laugh at each other, dress up as characters and mess around or generally have fun singing and playing air guitar with our mates. Unless of course you are a “serious” gamer or a “fanboy” in which case you’re still really funny because we’re [real gamers] laughing at you.

Anyway one of my Twitter Fellows, good web chap called Rhys Wynne, put me onto a little gem of a “professional” gaming reviewer who goes by the handle of Yahtzee and writes in a column he calls Zero Punctuation. (more…)

Magic the Gathering – Rise of Eldrazi

Magic the Gathering – Rise of Eldrazi

Well, it’s been a long long time since I did a post and a long time since we looked at anything from the world of Magic the Gathering.

One of the reasons is, well, we haven’t been playing it.  With holidays, Final Fantasy, Heavy Rain etc etc it’s not been top of the list.

Maybe we’re waiting for the June 18th release of the newest of what seems like many forthcoming multi-player variants, Archenemy.  Not too much info on it at the moment but its “One vs Many” tagline has led to speculation of a “WoW raid deck” style which will interest GFUK.

But, the latest and more relevant news from the MTG world is the start of the spoiler info for ‘Rise of Eldrazi’. (more…)
