Shotgun Rules

When wagons roamed the plains of the Old West, the passenger of these Wagons carried a Shotgun to fend off bandits and the like.  Nowadays, to ride “Shotgun” doesn’t refer to carrying a gun, unless you’re in the city.  Being the front seat passenger is a position to cherish and one that needs to be earned.  We have strict rules on this, rules that must be followed for the right, nay, PRIVILEGE to ride up front.

The rules are…

You must say the word “shotgun” and…

  • be completely outdoors
  • be heard by the driver
  • be fully dressed (including shoes on feet (Outerwear may be held) and any hand held items retrieved from indoors)
  • not go back inside (In this instance, Shotgun may be called again, following these rules)
  • have full line of sight to the vehicle

There are of course addendum’s to the above…

Shotgun may not be called if someone is holding the passenger door handle (This is considered Shotgun)

  • For this to apply, the car MUST be unlocked
  • Attempting to open a locked car will result in disqualification and Shotgun may be recalled
  • Sitting down in the Shotgun seat is also considered shotgun BUT if you need to leave the vehicle to allow someone else in, you forfeit Shotgun.

If the car is indoors (a garage etc), the Shotgun caller must be in the same room as the car

The “Reload” Rule

  • Once per “journey” the driver may call “reload”
  • This resets all previous shotgun calls and the shotgun position is available again, all rules reset
  • This can not be played if the shot-gunner won their position via “Sitting in seat”
  • The driver MAY NOT be asked or otherwise coerced into a reload

Exceptions

  • Current or “potential” partners of the driver are considered to have Shotgun at all times
  • Relations of the driver also has passenger seat privileges
  • On long journeys where there are multiple drivers, only named drivers may call shotgun and this must be fairly rotated

Duties

A position of power does not come without it’s responsibilites, the shot-gunner is…

  • in charge of tunes and keeping the car happy
  • in charge of Air Con and Heating and keeping the car comfortable
  • in charge of maps and directions and keeping the car on track
  • in charge of snack runs and keeping the car fed

The drivers decision is final!
