The sv cheats command is a console one so you need to use the in game console to enter it after logging in.

Now I found an other solution here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1031711 and the command they are talking about is mm_dedicated_force_servers “your_ip_here”. And I’ve used it in my Autoexec.cfg just under cl_updaterate “30? and used my ISP IP where you see “your ip here”. And now it connects through a lobby to my server. So my problem is finally gone with an other command. I don’t know if your familiar with it but maybe you can mention it optionally in your guide. You only have to edit the autoexec.cfg for it and off course know your WAN IP and if it changes you have to change it with it. Thank god my ip haven’t changed for like 8 months ?.

I would like to thank you for your support and for making this guide. Now I have to find out the things you can do with the console ;-). The command sv_cheats 1 I’ve put into my server.cfg but it doesn’t seem to work. A user password to make it private is it only for public people and not the friends? Because I’ve added a line that set the user password and in the dedicated configuration screen I see its works but none of my friends got any input screen for it.

If you are using quotes make sure you use non smart quotes at the start and end but it should work without them.

I’ve been looking in the console on my gaming pc and I see the sv_search_key is processed but I see something strange. I see in red letters: “sv_search_key” = “”
and under that: unknown command “Mpowers1988″. That’s the reason I used it with and without quotes.

Sorry to bother you again :-(. I wish Valve had a easy complete out of the box experience without any manual adjustments.

The fact it’s not running sv search key makes me think something is wrong, the quotes around values are actually optional to my knowledge, I use them and its always worked fine.

When in the lobby set to best available dedicated.

Just making sure you don’t have the //# in front of sv_search_key? this comments the line out and would explain why it is not running and the others are?

I would also remove the sv_search_max_ping from the autoexec, its not used so much in L4D2 and this actually maybe what is causing the issue.

As for the key binding clash I can’t help you with that one, try checking out the autoexec thread on the steam forums and speak to the guys who put it together.

add your sv search line to the top section under “rate”

sv_search_key “Mpowers1988″

and replace the current autoexec, the one in my download may be a little outdated now so I will update it.

Left 4 dead 2 is the only game I have installed on steam. The directory I use is: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg. I use that dir for both my dedicated server and game machine.

I thought the autoexec.cfg had to be put on the dedicated server to so that’s sorted out. Now that I’ve deleted the autoexec.cfg on my server and put your autoexec.cfg (advanced)one on my pc the glow commands work. But for some reason I still can’t join my server through a lobby. I’ve edited your “edit me” into sv_search_key Mpowers1988; in the autoexec.cfg. I assume the ; sign has to be at the end? Also there is no need for quotes around my value? I’ve put in my server.cfg sv_search_key “Mpowers1988″. I let the quotes around my search value because they where already there in your file. WHen I look at the console with the ~ key I see that the autoexec.cfg is being used but I don’t see any sv_search_key command. I do see something like this: unknown command sv_search_max_ping.

When I am in the lobby I have to choose best didicated server or a local server? When I choose local server It goes to the loopback address (127.0.0.1) even though I have no dedicated server on my gaming rig.

Also in the autoexec.cfg (advanced) I see a line: bind “SHIFT” “+speeding”; //# walk 2-tap toggle bind (game default) Now I don’t know what the benefits are from this but I have deleted some of the bindings in that scripts because it mixes up my current keysettings. And I can’t get them right……..by assigning a other key to them.

What am I missing? I am so stupid ;-)

The autoexec goes on your computer, config file goes on the server, both need to have a matching sv serach key.

There is one of the newer commands that “breaks” sv search key but off top of my head I cannot remember which it is, it certinally would not be in the files downloaded from the site but if you took the new one from the steam forums it might be.

The fact sv search key is not working and glow commands are not suggests to me autoexec is not in the right place or loading correctly.

When you first load left 4 dead press the console key (¬ on English keyboards but I think ~ on American) and have a look what it says, if autoexec has ran you should see a sv search key command with your server in here. Have you made sure you put it in your L4D2 folder as well as L4D one? When I wrote this guide it was for L4D1 so the path detailed in the description needs to be slightly changed to the L4D2 folder if that’s what you;re setting up.

I’ve been busy setting up my own L2D2 dedicated server but I have some questions. That autoexec script do you have to put it on the dedicated server or the pc you game on?

I downloaded the L4D Community Autoexec 2.3 script and for some reason the sv_search_key doesn’t work in there because in a lobby it won’t connect. Now I am assuming both the config.cfg and the autoexec.cfg must reside on the dedicated server. Also I get “unknown commands” on all the glow commands. The latest autoexec 2.3 scrip comes with 2 directories………I am asuming those directories has to be placed in the same place as all the others? (config.cfg,etc)

could you please help me with this…….I have been testing for so long now.
