Top 10 Planechase Planes

Hello Everyone,

We thought I’d take a look at our opinions of the top 10 Planes (5 each) from Planechase.  As you may know by now, we don’t play ultra competitive games or tournament magic.  So the short list we put together will be based on the following…

  • Fun factor
  • How much it will have a general effect on the game, not a HUGE game winning one
  • How much it will benefit all players
  • Personal choice

So here we go, starting with number 5 and working to our favourite…

In at Five…

Jesta: The Maelstrom of Alara

The Maelstrom
Jesta: Awesome! Although that “permanent” card could be anything, it’s still a nice feeling knowing that the card you reveal could be your 7-8 mana bomb that swings the game in your favour.  Could easily be a land.  Going for the Chaos is also worthwhile, even if you Planeswalk so the next guy doesn’t get a freebie :)

Diablos: Murasa of Zendikar

Diablos: This is a great first Plane to land on and is like picking up the speed shoes on Sonic, the game will rapidly accelerate and since Planechase tends to be fairly creature heavy, it usually applies to everyone. Rolling Chaos well it’s nothing ground breaking but an early 4/4 creature is nice and it’s a good backup sacrifice when someone plays that innocent blood card later in the game!

In at Four…

Jesta: The Aether Flues of Iquatana

The Aether Flues

Jesta: As with the maelstrom, except you have a bit of control.  Sac that 0/1 goat and cross your fingers.  Also, as with Maelstrom, going for the Chaos is a good thing, even if you walk away.

Diablos: Naar Isle of Wildfire

Naar Isle of Wildfire

Diablos: Hiding behind you 0/1 Goat army or you “creatures can’t attack Plane”? Not anymore. You have a ticking time-bomb Plane that will literally wipe you out unless you act fast and do something about it. The exciting part od this Plane is that it can drastically turn the tide of battle from one player to another and suddenly those weakened players are spending all their mana to get off ASAP.

Rolling Chaos is exactly what it needs to be, a kick to the groin of someone who is down or a special screw you to someone who is that little bit healthier than you, I love this Plane for mixing the game up and every time it comes up in our games it’s a fun one.

In at Three…

Jesta: Izzet Steam Maze of Ravnica

Izzet Steam Maze

Jesta: I just like this one.  It might not be as fun or as powerful as previous cards but it’s a personal favourite.  I once cast Unmake with two Deathbringer Liege in play and took out 4 creatures, lots of fun.

Diablos: Sanctum of Serra from Serra’s Realm

Diablos: The best thing about Sanctum of Serra is that you never know if it will be a blessing or a curse. I have been on both ends of this Plane, rolling like mad to clear it and doing everything I can before we leave and it really managers to add that “desperate” element to a game. Serra’s Realm also gets a special mention from me because I love Angel Art and this is where they all live! Woot!

Chaos manages to easily live up to the standard ability meaning you can climb back from nowhere to be back on 20 life and possibly even in control of the whole game. No matter what way you look at it SoS changes the game every time.

Just Missing Out First and Coming in at Second…

Jesta: Pools of Becoming from Bolas’s Meditation Realm

Pools of Becoming

Jesta: This one has a REAL Chaos ability.  The Plane ability itself is a nice touch, mostly because it can screw blue players but rolling Chaos is where this one comes into play.  I’m sure this one will be a staple in most Planechase Decks, but in casual, the excitement of wondering what 3 wonders you reveal is what this game is for!

Diablos: Otoria of Dominaria

Diablos: Otarai is where shit goes down and the Plane certainly brings that home. Bringing good old flashback to every card in your graveyard as well as offering it at a decent cost means this Plane is always welcome for most players but lets face it, the Chaos is where it’s at.

Rolling Chaos on Otaria is pretty much the best roll you can do in Planechase, taking an extra turn is game changing at the best of times if not completely game winning. Watch your few creatures gain super backup and get a chance to attack before all those pesky sorcereries have a chance to hit them, your opponents don’t even get to untap.

Finally, our Winners Are…

Jesta: Panopticon of Mirrodin

Panopticon

Jesta: I know what you’re thinking.. “What!? This isn’t the best one!”.  Well, maybe not but I like it.  I’m a fan of Howling Mine, I’m also a fan of card drawing.  I also like Planes where if you Planeswalk or Chaos in your turn you don’t mind, stops the next guy drawing.  Plus, art by John Avon :)

Diablos: Eloren Wilds of Shandalar

Diablos: OK so I really like the Meditation Pool but I wanted to pick something different from Jesta and this is my second favourite. Eloren Wilds is pretty much the only card which both speeds up the game and slows it down at the same time. An early Chaos role here can be disaster for a player but it’s worth it for that double mana! Lets see some early stompy creatures and huge Fireballs and really mix the game up!

Just when you thought it was all going your way, no spells for you!

That’s it!

Obviously there are gonna be a lot of opinions out there so let us know what your favourite Planes are which ones have been the most fun in your games so far!
